Laurence Holmes

Host

It’s hard for me to believe that I’ve been at the Score since 1998. It seems like it was just yesterday. I feel like I’m the youngest of “Score Generation 1.” I was a 22 year old kid when I started producing Les Grobstein’s overnight show. Hell, I even remember when Dan Bernstein was doing Sunday mornings (I used to produce that show and he wouldn’t bring me bagels).

I’m happy to have done just about every job at the Score: Board Op, Executive Producer and now Host and Reporter. I started covering the Bears in 2003 and love it. I’ve always said that it’s the “City Hall of Sports.” From Training Camp til the end of the season, I’m obsessed with what’s going on with the team and try really hard to find the truth and bring it to you.

If you’re wondering about the personal...I was born and raised on the Southside. Roseland/Morgan Park to be specific. I fell in love with radio listening to Steve & Garry on my parents kitchen floor. My family moved to Glenwood so that I could go to Homewood-Flossmoor High School and it’s probably why I work at the Score today. I had my own talk show there when I was 16, sure it was only 1,500 watts, but it was a ton of fun. And quite honestly, the facilities at H-F were better than the old bunker on Belmont (All Generation 1 guys know what I’m talking about).

From there I went to DePaul and while a student there, I was an intern for Lou Canellis and Jeff Joniak at the old WMAQ. Is it irony or coincidence that we now broadcast on that signal in that building? I also got my first taste of TV working on the weekends at Channel 9 for Dan Roan, Rich King and the awesome Krista Ruch. While I was doing that I was playing baseball for the DePaul Club team. I even had a couple minor-league tryouts with: The Marlins, Braves and Expos (moment of silence). Right now I’m the starting third baseman for the Score softball team. How the mighty have fallen...

I love what I do and I’m proud to work with all the people I’ve encountered either on Belmont or downtown. Having produced: Terry Boers, Dan Bernstein, Mike North, Dan Jiggetts, Mac, Mike Murphy & Fred Huebner...I’ve taken a lot from each of them and it’s helped shape the host and reporter I am today. And yes, I still miss the old “Me & Z” show with Dan Zampillo and yes, that’s where the “Me Show” name comes from.
